Water System Update

The Kittery Water District continues to respond to water system issues associated with excessive water usage from a significant customer leak at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and an additional water main break on Gerrish Island Lane in Kittery Point.
The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has advised that the leak on the installation has been stopped and the affected area has been isolated from the remainder of its water system. The Shipyard’s Public Works Department is continuing to monitor the area and will complete the permanent repair as quickly as possible.
The District is receiving reports of clear water returning in several areas throughout town as conditions within the distribution system continue to stabilize. However, some customers, particularly those near Gerrish Island and Kittery Point, may continue to experience discolored water, pressure fluctuations, or temporary interruptions.
Repair work on the water main break on Gerrish Island Lane remains ongoing. Customers affected by that break may remain temporarily without water service while District crews isolate and repair the damaged section. Water service will be restored as soon as the repair can be safely completed and is not dependent upon completion of the Shipyard’s permanent repair.
Although some customers may experience discolored water, color and appearance fall under the non-enforceable National Secondary Drinking Water Regulations and are considered aesthetic issues. Plant treatment chemistry and water production remain within State requirements.
Customers are encouraged to use caution when doing laundry, cleaning, and other household activities while discoloration remains present.
