Water System Recovery Update – Tuesday, July 21, 2026 (8AM)

As of 8:00 AM – Tuesday, July 21

The Kittery Water District continues to respond to water system issues associated with the water main breaks that occurred over the weekend.

While repairs have been completed, some customers may continue to experience temporary water discoloration as conditions within the distribution system continue to stabilize.

Clear Your Water Lines

Customers experiencing discolored water should begin by running cold water from the kitchen sink until it runs clear.

Please allow the cold water to run for approximately 10–15 minutes, or longer depending on the length of the service line and household plumbing.

Discolored Water

Although some customers may continue to experience discolored or brownish water, color and appearance fall under the National Secondary Drinking Water Regulations and are considered aesthetic issues.

Plant treatment chemistry and water production remain within State requirements.

Even after the discoloration has cleared, small amounts of fine sediment may remain suspended within the distribution system and household plumbing. This is expected and should continue to improve as the distribution system returns to normal and household plumbing continues to be used.

Ongoing System Recovery

Kittery Water District crews continue flushing targeted areas of the distribution system where additional flushing is needed to help clear water lines and improve water clarity.

Some areas may clear more quickly than others depending on their location within the distribution system and normal water usage..

Household Activities

If water remains discolored, customers may wish to wait until it clears before doing laundry, cleaning, or other household activities where water appearance may be important.

Customers are encouraged to continue running cold water until it runs clear.
