Members of the Kittery Water District Staff will be delivering notices (below) asking for customer participation in an EPA Mandated Service Line Inventory. All public water systems are required to submit a full inventory of water service line materials by October 2024. Customer participation will be key to accomplish this task but of course is of a voluntary basis. The KWD greatly appreciates your time and consideration in fulling this mandate.
Kittery Water District Service Line Inventory
The Kittery Water District (KWD) is undertaking a massive project and we need your help. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated that ALL Public Water Systems (PWS) in the country must conduct a complete water service line inventory for every home, business, and school by October 16, 2024. The inventory requires the KWD to accurately identify the type of material used for your water service from the water main in the street to the curb stop (public side), and from the curb stop to your house (private side). The goal is to identify any lines that used galvanized iron pipe or lead pipe, and develop plans to eventually replace those lines with copper or plastic lines, lessening potential negative health effects from the old lead and iron lines. The KWD maintains service records that are quite detailed and accurate for the public side, but may be lacking on the private side, as we are not involved in installing the private side lines to your home. In an effort to obtain this missing information, we are requesting homeowners to allow a trained KWD employee to briefly enter your home and view the water supply line as it enters your home. The effort will only take a minute or two and is of no cost to you. This can also be a good opportunity to have your aging water meter replaced if its life cycle has been reached, and again, at no cost to you. Our employee can make a quick inspection at the time of delivery of this memo if that works for you, or we ask that you contact the KWD to set up an appointment to perform an inspection at a time that is convenient for you.
