Water Conservation Tips

Simple ways customers can help protect our drinking water supply during drought conditions, dry weather, and periods of high system demand.

EVERY SMALL CHANGE HELPS PROTECT OUR WATER SUPPLY

Kittery Water District encourages all customers to use water wisely year-round, especially during periods of drought or high system demand.

While water may seem inexpensive, it is still a limited and valuable resource. Conserving water helps reduce unnecessary demand, protect local resources, and support our community and environment.

Even everyday habits add up quickly.

Check for Leaks First

One of the easiest ways to conserve water is to check your home for leaks. Running toilets, dripping faucets, leaking hoses, outdoor spigots, and irrigation system leaks can waste a surprising amount of water.

How much can a leak cost?

Leak Size Gallons Wasted per Quarter Estimated Cost
1/32″ 19,000 $76
1/16″ 74,000 $296
1/8″ 296,000 $1,184
3/16″ 652,000 $2,608
1/4″ 1,181,000 $4,724

Indoor Water Conservation

  • Take shorter showers when possible.
  • Avoid unnecessary toilet flushing.
  • Turn off water while brushing teeth, washing your face, or shaving.
  • Consider low-flow showerheads and water-saving toilets.

  • Only run the dishwasher when it is full.
  • Wash produce in a bowl instead of under running water.
  • Keep drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap.
  • Wash only full loads of laundry.

Outdoor Water Conservation

  • Water lawns only when necessary.
  • Water early in the morning or later in the evening.
  • Raise your mower height to help retain soil moisture.
  • Use mulch around plants and trees.
  • Consider native or drought-tolerant landscaping.

  • Check sprinklers regularly for leaks or misting.
  • Use a broom or blower instead of a hose for outdoor surfaces.
  • Limit vehicle washing during drought conditions.
  • Cover pools and spas to reduce evaporation.

During Drought Conditions

When drought conditions exist, please make every effort to reduce non-essential water use, including lawn irrigation, filling pools or hot tubs, washing vehicles, power washing, and long outdoor watering sessions.

Simple Ways to Start Today

  • Fix any leaks you find.
  • Water outdoors only when necessary.
  • Run only full loads of laundry and dishes.
  • Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor water use during dry weather.
