On March 8, 2023 John Perry and Carl Palm met with Kittery School Department Superintendent Eric Waddell to discuss the idea of the KWD creating an academic scholarship open to the graduating class of 2023. With a draft proposal of the scholarship in hand, a short discussion of terms and responsibilities on each side of the table led to a quick agreement and the finalization of the scholarship.
The KWD is offering a $1,000.00 scholarship in the hopes of promoting careers in the drinking water industry in Maine. Prospective candidates would ideally pursue secondary education in such areas as: Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Environmental or Civil Engineering, Forestry, Water Resource Management, etc., but are not limited to just these fields. A scholarship review committee of 3 members will review all applications, interview their top 3 applicants, and choose a final winner. The winner of the scholarship will need to obtain and provide proof of a first semester GPA of 2.5 (or the equivalent) in order to collect the scholarship.
The KWD is proud to offer this scholarship to a graduating member of the R.W. Traip Academy class of 2023. The funding for the scholarship is made possible from monies generated from the District’s Forest Management Program. The program manages sustainable timber production on over 2,375 acres of forested lands within our watershed. The KWD is hopeful that the scholarship will be offered annually, as funding and interest permit. For more information, please see the attached link.
